Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys !

Liptov region is located in the northern part of Slovakia about three hours driving distance from Bratislava. People visit the region because of the nature, mountains, Liptovská Mara lake, ski resorts, and many other attractions all year around.

This tour will show you one of the most beautiful regions in Slovakia – Liptov. Its uniqueness lies in its variety – a relatively small territory offers a contrast of surrounding high peaks and river valleys, waterfalls and open pastures with herds of grazing cows, sheep, horses or goats. The most visited places in Liptov are the impressive ice cave Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa and the water reservoir Liptovská Mara. I will take you to a lesser known hiking location which could be one of the most beautiful trails that Liptov has to offer. Really nice trek that combines a bit of rock climbing, green meadows, local pub, old mill, and lookout terraces with nice views. It is not a very difficult hike and the location is great offering a possibility to finish the day relaxing at Liptovská Mara lake or in a water park with fun slides and wellness area.

As it will take you about three hours from Bratislava to drive to the trail head (Prosiek or Kvačany village) I would recommend leaving Bratislava very early (5 – 6 am) or spending the night before the trek in the area. The trek is nice if you have enough time.

We will start our hike early in the morning in Prosiek village. From here we will enter a valley that lies between the massive mountains of Lomno and Prosečné. To walk through the rocky terrain and running springs wooden bridges and chains attached to the rocks were constructed. The valley widens into a meadow later on. On the way we will admire rocks, waterfalls and caves. From here we will continue on easy, flat terrain of the karst plain called Svorad. This will take us to a settlement called Veľké Borové, where we will have a longer break with some refreshments.

The second part was my favourite. It is a large meadow. Perfect place for a snack and to relax for a while. Right after you pass this area you will get to Veľké Borové – small village with accommodation and two restaurants.

Veľké Borové is the entrance point to Kvačianska valley, which used to be an old wagon road that formed the only connection between the local villages and “the world”. The most important tourist point in the valley is a unique wooden mill, Oblazy, built in the first half of the 19th century at the confluence of Hutianka, Borovianka and Ráztočianka rivers.

From here you continue to the other valley – Kvačianska. At the beginning you can visit a mill from the beginning of the 20th century that used to be used by the locals. You can see one of four mills that used to stand here in the past. The mill is a national monument, you can enter and see how it functioned.

Another attractive tourist point is Roháč – a rocky formation with a beautiful view of the entire canyon. From here we will continue walking through the valley back to our starting point, the Prosiek village.
